ANNULAR PANCREAS

  • Annular pancreas is a rare congenital anomaly which occurs due to failure f complete rotation of ventral pancreatic bud development, creating a thin ring of pancreatic tissue surrounding 2nd part of duodenum.
  • Most commonly associated with congenital duodenal stenosis and in children Down syndrome.
  • Obstruction is proximal to ampulla.

  

CLINICAL FEATURES-

a) Neonates-

  • Early in life
  • Acute intestinal obstruction with vomiting and inability of food intake.

b) Adult-

  • At age of 20 years
  • Vomiting with bile stained
  • Duodenal ulcer present

 

INVESTIGATIONS-

  • Plain X- ray – double bubble appearance
  • ERCP- treatment of choice
  • Normal histology

  

TREATMENT-

  • Duodeno- duodenostomy
