Autoscopy hallucinations
- It refers to the phenomena involving out of body experiences, sudden conscious awareness from a viewpoint above or behind the body, or complete loss of self-attribution.
- I.e., these hallucinations are related to oneself or part of oneself.
Autoscopy hallucinations may be:-
- Positive autoscopy –
- The person experiences of seeing oneself in the external environment.
- It is seen in schizophrenia and parietooccipital lesions.
- Negative autoscopy –
- When the person does not see his image in the mirror.
- Internal autoscopy –
- When a person experiences seeing the internal organ of the body.
Other hallucinations:
1. Olfactory & gustatory hallucinations:
- Hallucinations of smell & taste
- Occur as a symptom of temporal lobe disease. (e.g., complex partial seizures).
- Olfactory hallucination may also occur in depression and schizophrenia.
2. Tactile hallucination/ Haptic hallucination (Hallucinations of touch):
- Cutaneous perception may vary from vague tingling or sensations of temperature to perceptions experienced as being held / hit / caressed.
- Tactile hallucinations are seen in schizophrenia.
- A special type of tactile hallucination, i.e., “Formication”, where there is the perception of insect crawling under the skin, is characteristics of cocaine poisoning and may also occur in alcohol withdrawal’.
3. Extracompine hallucinations:
- Hallucinations experienced outside the limits of one’s sensory fields.
- E.g., hearing voices of people who are talking several kilometres away,
- Seeing the people in the next room through the wall,
- Seeing through the back of one’s head.
