Identify the bacteria seen in following stained slide:
Answer- A. Nocardia asteroides
- The given image is showing AFB stained filamentous bacteria, most likely Nocardia asteroides. Actinomyces is another filamentoas bacteria, bat does not stain positive with acid fast stain.
- Gram-positive, branching pleomorphic rods with intermittent or beaded staining patterns, especially when invading tissues.
- Nocardiae are gram-positive weakly acid-fast branching rod- shaped bacteria and can be visualized by a modified Ziehl- Nietsen stain like Fite-Faraco method.
