                GASTROSCHISIS (BELLY CLEFT)

  • Gastroschisis is a defect of the anterior abdominal wall just lateral to the umbilicus.
  • It is the commonest anomaly in babies born to mothers under 20 years of age
  • Common in premature babies
  • It is a associated with defect in the involution of 2nd umbilical vein.
  • Umbilicus is normal.
  • Defect is almost to the right of umbilical cord.
  • Nonrotation and intestinal atresia are common associations.
  • Infants are prone to fluid loss, necrotising enterocolitis, paralytic ileus.

  

 

 

TREATMENT-

  • Fluid management
  • TPN
  • Antibiotics
  • R-T aspiration
  • Resection and anastomosis is done (sterile silastic silo bag used in the procedure)
