MOLECULAR MOTORS & MARKERS

MOLECULAR MOTORS:

  • Are protein with ATPase/GTPase activity that moves proteins, organelles & other cell parts from one part to other.
  • Generates energy via ATP/GTP for this force.
IMPORTANT CYTOSKELETAL MOLECULAR MOTORS:

Sl. no TYPE OF CYTOSKELETAL MOLECULAR MOTOR DESCRIPTION
 1.  Kinesin
  • An ATPase – Uses ATP hydrolysis.
  • Involved in axoplasmic transport.
  • Moves vesicles towards the plus end of microtubules
 2.  Dynein
  • An ATPase.

Two types:

  • Cytosolic dynein –
  • Involved in axoplasmic flow.
  • Moves vesicles towards the minus end of microtubules.
  • Axonemal dynein –
  • Power ciliary & flagellar movement’
 3.  Dynamin
  • A GTPase – Uses GTP.
  • Involved in endocytosis.
 4.  Myosin
  • An ATPase – Uses ATP.
  • Involved in muscle contraction along with actin.
IMPORTANT CELLULAR MARKERS:
  • Cellular markers are specific enzyme proteins acting as markers for particular organelle.
ORGANELLE MARKERS
Mitochondria ATP synthase, Creatine kinase, Glutamate dehydrogenase
Plasma membrane  5 -Nucleotidase, Adenyl cyclase, Na+K+ATP’ase
Lysosome Acid phosphatase
Golgi apparatus Galactosyl transferase, Golgi mannosidase II, Sialyl transferase.
Peroxisome Catalase
Cytosol Lactate dehydrogenase
