A.

Seizures in severe pre-eclampsia

B.

D.

Tachycardia

Show Answer

Correct Answer » C

Explanation

Magnesium sulfate (MgSO₄) is used mainly in obstetrics & cardiology for seizure prevention & certain arrhythmias.

Established uses:
– Prevent seizures in severe pre-eclampsia
– Treat & prevent recurrent seizures in eclampsia
– Treat arrhythmias like torsades de pointes
– Provide fetal neuroprotection in preterm labor (reduces cerebral palsy risk)

Mechanism:
• CNS depressant
• Reduces acetylcholine release
• Stabilizes neuromuscular junction

MgSO₄ toxicity signs:
1. Loss of deep tendon reflexes
2. Respiratory depression
3. Cardiac arrest

Antidote: Calcium gluconate

MgSO₄ *does NOT* prevent Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS).
RDS prevention uses antenatal corticosteroids (betamethasone or dexamethasone).
MgSO₄ is given for neuroprotection, not RDS prevention.
