                                                BRANCHIAL FISTULA

  • Branchial fistula is congenital.
  • It occurs due to failure of fusion of 2nd arch with 4th arch.
  • Occurs due to persistent 2nd Branchial cleft.
 

  • The tract passes through the common carotid artery deep to the accessory and hypoglossal nerve.
  • The external opening is situated in lower 3rd of neck at anterior border of sternomastoid muscle (anterior aspect of posterior pillar of tonsils).

  

CLINICAL FEATURES-

  • Discharging mucus
  • Seen in growing adults (equal M:F)
  • Can be unilateral or bilateral
  • Also called as lateral fistula of the neck.

  

INVESTIGATIONS-

  • Fistulogram done by injecting methylene blue into external opening and defining the tract.

  

TREATMENT-

  • Complete excision of the tract
