Golgi apparatus
→ Golgi Apparatus / Dictyosome is a stack of six or more membrane-enclosed sacs (Cisterns).
→ Polarized structure with “Cis-side” (Receiving end), Golgi Apparatus proper (Functional end) &
“Trans- side” (Releasing end).
- Receiving end is close to RER and releasing end is far away from RER.
→ Function: Protein storage, concentration, processing, packing & sorting out done in Golgi.
→Causes Glycosylation of proteins synthesized by RER (translation)- converts them into glycoproteins.
→This is known as “POST-TRANSLATIONAL MODIFICATION”.
→ Glycosylation ensures stability of the protein.
→Combines proteins with Mannnose-6-Phosphate and transports them to the lysosomes= SORTING of proteins
→ Cellular storehouses of metabolic enzymes.
→ Matrix = Nearly 50 enzymes catalyzing various metabolic reactions.
→ Enzymes: Catalase & urate oxidase (Uric acid oxidase).
→ Function:
- Alcohol detoxification, H2O2 degradation (catalase) & other harmful compounds in Liver
- Oxidation of long & very long chain fatty acids.
