HEMORRHAGE IN RETINA        

• Clinical appearance of retinal hemorrhage is determined by the location of blood in the retina.
• Retinal hemorrhages are categorized as:

1. Superficial hemorrhage (Flame shaped/ Splinter shaped):

• Located superficially in the superficial nerve fiber layer.

2. Deep hemorrhage (Dot blot): Occur in deeper retinal layers.

3. Retrohyaloid (subhyaloid) hemorrhage (Boat-shaped or scaphoid):

• Located anterior (internal) to the retina, within retrohyoid space.

4. Subretinal hemorrhage: Located deep (external) to the retina.

5. Vitreous hemorrhage: Intravitreal hemorrhage m/c by retinal lesions.

CHERRY RED SPOT

• Central part of macula appears as a red spot, whenever there is retinal edema.
• This is because, vascular choroid shins through the very thin area of retina at this area.

Causes of cherry red spot

1. GM2 gangliosidoses (Tay sachs & sandhoff)                         
2. GM1 gangliosidoses
3. Niemann- Pick’s disease
4. Gaucher’s disease
5. Metachromatic leukodystrophy
6. Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO)
7. Trauma (Berlin’s edema/ commotion retinae)
8. Farber’s disease
9. Goldberg’s disease
10. Hurler’s syndrome
11. Mucopolysacharidosis VII
12. Multiple sulfatase deficiency
13. Poisoning-Carbon mono-oxide, methanol
14. Rarely in Krabbe’s disease
