INTRODUCTION

  • ICDS was launched on 2nd October 1975 in 33 Community development block.
  • ICDS programme is a globally recognized community based early child care programme, which addresses the basic interrelated needs of yound children, expectant and nursing mothers and adolescent girls across the life cycle, in a holistic manner.
  • Sponsored by ministry  Ministry of social welfare 

OBJECTIVES

  • To improve the nutritional and health status of children in the age-group 0-6 years
  • To lay the foundation for proper psychological, physical and social development of the child
  • To reduce the incidence of mortality, morbidity, malnutrition and school dropout
  • To achieve effective co-ordination of policy and implementation amongst the various departments to promote child development
  • To enhance the capability of the mother to look after the normal health and nutritional needs of the child through proper nutrition and health education

THE ICDS TEAM

  • The Anganwadi Workers
  • Anganwadi Helpers

  • Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM)
  • Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA)
Administrative units for ICDS are as follows:

  • Rural area: Community development block
  • Tribal area: Tribal development block
  • Urban area: Group of slums

SUPPLEMENTARY NUTRITION 

Under ICDS Scheme supplementary nutrition is given to: 

  • Children below 6 yrs
  • Nursing mothers
  • Expectant mothers
Supplement
  • Each child upto 6 years of age to get 300 calories and 8-10 grams of protein
  • Each adolescent girl to get 500 calories and 20-25 grams of protein
  • Each pregnant women and lactating mother to get 600 calories and 18-20 gms of protein
  • Each malnourished child to get 600 calories and 16-20 grams of protein
  • Supplementary nutrition is given for 300 days a year.
Beneficiaries of the supplementary nutrition initiative under the ICDS programme are as follows:

  Group of beneficiary   Supplement
  6-72 month children   500 calories and 12-15 grams protein
  6-72 month children with severe malnourishment   800 calories and 20-25 grams protein
  Pregnant and lactating mothers   600 calories and 18-20 grams protein

Kishori Shakti Yojna (KSY)

 KSY is rename of ‘Adolescent Girl’s scheme’ under ICDS.

  • Its aims are –
  • To improve the nutritional and health status of adolescent girls

To promote self development, awareness of health, hyiegene nutrition and family life and child care. o KSY covers 6118 ICDS projects.

Exam Important

  • Under the ICDS scheme a child of 12 months age who is severely malnourished will get supplementary nutrition amounting to 800 calories and 20-25 grams protein
  • Administrative unit of ICDS project in rural area is community development block
  • In ICDS the requirement in pregnant females is 500 cal, 25 gm protein
  • ICDS was launched at Community development block
  • Adolescent ,Pregnant & lactating females are  benificiaries of ICDS scheme
  • Nutritional supplement for two year old child under ICDS scheme is  500 Calories
  • In ICDS the requirement in pregnant females is 600 calories and 18-20 grams
  • The ICDS scheme includes children upto 6 years of age
  • The ICDS scheme is sponsored by  Ministry of Social welfare
