Ans.C Oil droplet cataract is seen in galactosemia.
Galactosemia:
- It is an autosomal recessive (AR) inherited inability to convert galactose to glucose.
- Galactose and its metabolite galactitol (dulcitol) accumulate in the lens, resulting in osmotic swelling and hence, cataract.
- It may be due to deficiency of Gal-1-PUT (Classical), UDP galactose- 4 -epimerase, present with failure to thrive, diarrhoea, vomiting, mental retardation, hepatomegaly and cataract within first few weeks of life.
- Deficiency of Galactokinase presents only with cataract.
- Associated with the development of oil-droplet cataract-bilateral, posterior subcapsular opacities which later becomes nuclear.
- Exclusion of galactose may reverse the lenticular changes.
- Diagnosed by urine assay-shows presence of reducing substances.
