ASA classification is done for physical status of the pt. it is divided into 6 grades
ASA 1 – normal healthy pt ie suffers from no systemic disease, is non smoker, minimal or no alcohol intake.
ASA2—mild systemic disease which is well controlled eg well controlled DM/HT, pregnancy, current smoker, social drinker.
ASA3 – severe systemic disease with functional limitation eg poorly controlled DM/HT, stable angina, moderate reduction of EF (40-45%).
ASA4 – severe systemic disease which is threat to life of the pt. eg unstable angina, DKA, severe reduction of EF.
ASA5 – moribund pt who is unlikely to survive without Sx eg ruptured thoracic or abdominal aneurysm.
ASA6- brain dead pt for organ donation.
