Answer D) All of the above
Grommets, also known as ventilation tubes (VTs) have been used as a treatment for glue ear for many years. They are small bobbin-shaped tubes which are inserted into the eardrum. Many different types are available, but the commonest ones are made of Teflon, an inert type of plastic.
Indications
- Unresolved bilateral otitis media with effusion for 3 months or more, associated with a conductive hearing loss (OME)
- Recurrent acute otitis media (RAOM)
- Persistent unilateral middle ear effusion in an adult (a biopsy should also be undertaken to exclude a post nasal space malignancy)
- Complications of acute otitis media (e.g. facial nerve palsy, mastoiditis)
- Severe tympanic membrane retraction (to prevent cholesteatoma formation)
Ménière’s disease (treatment and drug delivery)
