RESPIRATORY ACIDOSIS

  • Respiratory acidosis CO2 accumulation from reduced in respiratory rate, respiratory volume (hypoventilation) with compensatory elevated in HCO3.
  • pH is low in the blood.
  • Respiratory acidosis-
  1. pH- <7.4
  2. Primary change- Pco2 >40mm Hg
  3. Compensatory response- HCO3 > 24 mEq/ L

 Etiology

Clinical features-

  • Acute respiratory acidosis- anxiety, dyspnea, confusion, psychosis, hallucinations & coma
  • Memory loss, sleep disturbances, tremor, asterixis & papilledma

Treatment-

  • Adequate ventilation
