SILENT THYROIDITIS

  • Painless thyroiditis or silent thyroiditis  occurs with underlying autoimmune thyroid disease (subacute thyroiditis).

Postpartum thyroiditis

  • Occurs with subacute thyroiditis in women 3-6 months after pregnancy.
  • The risk of of recurrence in subsequent pregnancy is 70%.
  • Thyrotoxicosis lasting 2-4 weeks followed by hypothyroidism for 4-12 weeks.

INVESTIGATIONS-

  • Radioisotope uptake.
  • Thyroid function may be normal after 1 year.

TREATMENT-

  • Propanolol
  • Thyroxine replacement withdrawn after 6-9 months.
