Silent thyroiditis
SILENT THYROIDITIS
- Painless thyroiditis or silent thyroiditis occurs with underlying autoimmune thyroid disease (subacute thyroiditis).
Postpartum thyroiditis
- Occurs with subacute thyroiditis in women 3-6 months after pregnancy.
- The risk of of recurrence in subsequent pregnancy is 70%.
- Thyrotoxicosis lasting 2-4 weeks followed by hypothyroidism for 4-12 weeks.
INVESTIGATIONS-
- Radioisotope uptake.
- Thyroid function may be normal after 1 year.
TREATMENT-
- Propanolol
- Thyroxine replacement withdrawn after 6-9 months.
