FFP contains stable coagulation factors and plasma proteins : ‑

  1. Fibrinogen
  2. Albumin & Immunoglobulin
  3. Factor II, V, VII, IX, X, XI
  4. Antithrombin
  5. Protein C, S.

Indications for the use of FFP include:

  • Management of patients with selected coagulation factor deficiencies for which no specific coagulation concentrates are available (i.e., factors II (2), V (5), VII (7), X (10), XI (11), Proteins C or S*.
  • It plays an important role in therapeutic management when overt bleeding is present or anticipated in DIC patients with disturbed coagulation .
  • Reversal of warfarin effect
  • Use in antithrombin III deficiency
  • Treatment of immunodeficiencies . However, the development of a purified immune globulin for intravenous use largely has replaced Fresh frozen plasma
