Mammography (also called mastography) is the process of using low-energy X-rays (usually around 30 kVp) to examine the human breast for diagnosis and screening.
The goal of mammography is the early detection of breast cancer, typically through detection of characteristic masses or microcalcifications.
Mammogram results are often expressed in terms of the BI-RADS Assessment Category, often called a “BI-RADS score.” The categories range from 0 (Incomplete) to 6 (Known biopsy – proven malignancy).
In the UK mammograms are scored on a scale from 1-5 (1 = normal, 2 = benign, 3 = indeterminate, 4 = suspicious of malignancy, 5 = malignant). Evidence suggests that accounting for genetic risk factors improve breast cancer risk prediction
