1. Neurasthenia:
- Characterized by complaints of increased mental & physical fatigue after mild efforts.
2. Chronic fatigue syndrome (myalgic encephalomyelitis):
- Symptoms – Severe, debilitating fatigue, malaise, headaches, pharyngitis, low-grade fever, cognitive complaints, gastrointestinal symptoms & tender lymph nodes.
3. Culture-bound syndrome:
- Limited to a particular culture & not seen worldwide.
Subtypes:
- Dhat syndrome: Patient’s belief of passing semen in urine —-> physical & mental weakness.
- Koro: Patients’ fear of retracting penis into abdomen & causing death.
- Latah: Characterized by automatic obedience, echolalia & echopraxia.
4. Factitious disorder (Munchausen syndrome/hospital addiction):
- Patients produce fake symptoms with sole aim of obtaining medical attention – referred “professional patients”.
- Patients are from medical & related fields with basic understanding of symptoms/signs of various disorders.
Exam Important
- Culture-bound syndrome includes dhat syndrome & koro.
- Factitious disorder is also called as “Munchausen syndrome/hospital addiction”.
- Factitious disorder patients produce fake symptoms with sole aim of obtaining medical attention, hence referred “professional patients”.
- Factitious disorder usually affects medical & related fields with basic understanding of symptoms/signs of various disorders.
