Crude Birth Rate, Crude Death Rate And Growth Rate
- CRUDE means it include all causes and all ages – It is independent of age of population
Crude birth rate
- Is the natality or childbirth per 1,000 mid-year population
- It excludes the still births
- It is unaffected by age-distribution
- Crude birth rate = (Number of liver births in a year/ Estimated mid year population) x 100
- Is a measure of fertility
- CBR world=19.9 per 1000 population (Max 51 Niger; Min 7 Monaco) [2012]
- CBR India= 27.4 per 1000 population [2O14)
Crude death rate
- It is the simplest measure of mortality.
- It is defined as “the number of death (from all causes) per 1000 estimated mid-year population in one year, in a given place”
- A rate comprises the following elements
- Numerator
- Denominator
- Time specification
- Multiplier
1. Numerator
- Refers to the number of times an event (e.g. sickness, birth, death) has occured in a population, during a specified time period
- Numerator is a component of the denominator in calculating a rate, but not in a ratio.
2. Denominator
Denominator may be :
Related to population
- Mid year population → population estimated on first of July of an year
- Population at risk
- Person – time
- Person distance
Related to total events
- As in case fatality rate, denominator is total number of cases rather than total population.
- CDR (World):8.37 per 1000 population (Max 22 Lesotho; Min 1 UAE) [2011]
- CDR (lndia):7.0 per 1000 population [2014]
Growth rate
- The growth rate is the rate at which a population is increasing (or decreasing) in a given year due to natural increase and net migration, expressed as a percentage of the base population.
- The growth rate takes into account all components of population growth: births, deaths, and migration.
- It equals ( births – deaths )+_ net migration/ total population X K ( 100).
- It should never be confused with the birth rate, but it sometimes is.
| Annual growth rate | Decadal Growth Rate | |
| Defination | Crude birth rate (BR) minus cmde death rate (DR | Change in population over a decade |
| Growth Rate India | 1.64% | 17.64 |
- Growth rate (World):1.17% [UN World’s Population ProsPects Report 2006]
- Liberira (4.5%) Highest growth rate
- Rank 90:India (1.6%)
