LUDWIG ANGINA

  • Ludwig angina is cellulitis of submental and submandibular (streptococcoal infection) regions combined with inflammatory oedema of the mouth.

 Predisposing factors-

  • Carious tooth
  • Cancer of oral cavity
  • Calculi in submandibular gland
  • Chemotherapy
  • Cachexia
  • Chronic disease- diabetes

Clinical features

  • Brawny oedema in submandibular and submental region.
  • Oedema of the floor of the mouth
  • High grade fever
  • Putrid halitosis is characteristic feature.

Treatment-

  • Antibiotics
  • IV fluids & Ryle’s tube feeding
  • Surgery- Incision is made in submandibular region is most prominent part of the swelling.
