RIB NOTCHING


RIB NOTCHING

  • “Rib notches” are peripheral, sharply circumscribed osteolytic lesion on superior or inferior surface of ribs.

 Etiology-

I) Inferior surface

Arterial

Coarction of aorta

  • Bilateral
  • Seen on lower border of 3rd to 8th ribs
  • Absent in 1st and 2nd ribs
  • Present after age of 7years
  1. Aortic thrombosis (aortic obstruction)
  2. Taussig blalock operation for Fallot’s tetralogy
  3. Pulmonary atresia

II) Superior surface

  1. Connective tissue disease- SLE, scleroderma, Sjogren’s syndrome
  2. Metabolic- hyperparathyroidism
  3. Neurogenic- neurofibromatosis
