Q. 6

Which is an essential fatty acid:

 A

Prostacyclins

 B

Linoleic acid

 C

 D

Leukotrienes

Q. 6

Which is an essential fatty acid:

 A

Prostacyclins

 B

Linoleic acid

 C

Prostaglandins

 D

Leukotrienes

Ans. B

Explanation:

Linoleic acid

  • It is an unsaturated omega-6 fatty acid.
  • It is a colorless liquid at room temperature.
  • Chemically, linoleic acid is a carboxylic acid with an 18-carbon chain and two cis double bonds; the first double bond is located at the sixth carbon from the methyl end.
  • Linoleic acid belongs to one of the two families of essential fatty acids.
  • The body cannot synthesize linoleic acid from other food

Q. 7

 A

Linolenic acid

 B

Linoleic acid

 C

Lysergic acid

 D

Arachidonic acid

Q. 7

All of the following are essential fatty acids except:

 A

Linolenic acid

 B

Linoleic acid

 C

Lysergic acid

 D

Arachidonic acid

Ans. C

Explanation:

Linolenic acid

  • linoleic acid-Most important essential fatty acid
  • Arachidonic acid
  • Eicosapentanoic acid

Q. 8

Essential fatty acid is ‑

 A

Oleic acid

 B

Stearic acid

 C

Linoleic acid

 D

Cervonic acid

Q. 8

Essential fatty acid is ‑

 A

Oleic acid

 B

Stearic acid

 C

Linoleic acid

 D

Cervonic acid

Ans. C

Explanation:

The three polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), namely, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, and arachidonic acid are called essential fatty acids.

They are called essential fatty acids because human beings require these fatty acids but cannot synthesize them.

Humans lack the enzymes to introduce double bonds at carbon atom beyond C9 in the fatty acid chain.

Hence, human cannot synthesize linolenic acid and linolenic acid having double bonds beyond C9.

Arachidonic acid can be synthesized from linoleic acid. Therefore, in deficiency of linoleic acid, arachidonic acid also becomes essential fatty acids.

Therefore linoleic acid is the most important essential fatty acid as it serves as a basis for the production of other EFA.
