Carotid triangle is shown in the image.
ANTERIOR TRIANGLE OF NECK
Boundaries
- Anteriorly by the median plane of the neck
- Posteriorly by sternocleidomastoid muscle
- Superiorly by base of mandible & a line joining mandible to mastoid process.
- Superficial fascia contains Platysma, cervical branch of facial nerve, anterior jugular vein & few lymph nodes.
Subdivisions of the anterior triangle
- Submental triangle
- Digastric triangle
- Carotid triangle
- Muscular triangle
Submental triangle
- Median triangle
- Unpaired triangle
Boundaries:
- On each side anterior belly of digastric
- Base is formed by the body of hyoid bone
- Apex formed by symphysis menti of the mandible.
- Floor is formed by two mylohyoid muscle & their median raphe.
Contents:
- submental lymph nodes, submental vessels
- begining of anterior jugular vein
Digastric triangle
Boundaries:
- Anteroinferiorly : anterior belly of digastric
- Posteroinferiorly : posterior belly of digastric & stylohyoid
- Base- base of mandible & a line joining the angle of mandible to the mastoid process.
- Roof-
- Skin
- Superficial fascia containing platysma ,cervical branch of the facial nerve & transverse cutaneous nerve of neck
- Deep splits to enclose submandibular gland
- Floor- anteriorly by mylohyoid and posteriorly by hyoglossus
Contents:
- In the anterior part: submandibular gland facial vein, submandibular lymph node, facial artery, mylohyoid nerve and vessels
- In the posterior part: Parotid gland, external carotid artery before entering to parotid gland, styloglossus muscle, stylopharangeus muscle, glossopharangeal nerve, internal carotid artery, internal jugular vein & vagus nerve .
Carotid triangle
Boundaries:
Anterio-superiorly- posterior belly of digastric and stylohyoid
Anterio-inferiorly : superior belly of omohyoid
Posteriorly- anterior border of sternocleidomastoid.
Roof :
- Skin,
- Superficial fascia containing platysma, anterior cutaneous nerve of neck, cervical branch of facial nerve,Investing layer of deep cervical fascia
Floor : Thyrohyoid,hyoglossus muscle- Anteriorly
middle constrictor & inferior constrictor of pharynx -Posteriorly
Contents:
- Arteries- common carotid ,internal carotid ,external carotid arteries & branches of external carotid artery
- Veins- Internal jugular vein, common facial vein, pharyngeal vein, lingual ,superior thyroid vein.
- Nerves- Vagus,superior laryngeal,spinal accessory,hypoglossal & sympathetic chain
- Carotid sheath enveloping CCA, ECA,ICA, IJV & vagus nerve
- Lymph nodes- Jugulomohyoid & jugulodigastric group of deep cervical group of lymph nodes.
Muscular triangle
Boundaries:
- Anterosuperiorly – posterior belly of digastric & stlohyoid.
- Anteroinferiorly- superior belly of omohyoid
- Posteriorly- anterior border of sternocleidomastoid.
Contents:
- Infrahyoid ribbon muscles namely sternohyoid , omohyoid, sternothyroid & thyrohyoid
Infrahyoid muscles are supplied by ansa cervicalis except thyrohyoid which is supplied by C1 through hypoglossal nerve
