Components Of Body Fluids
COMPONENTS OF BODY FLUIDS

Total Body Water (TBW) (60% of body weight) – 42 liters |
Intracellular fluid(ICF) |
Extracellular fluid (ECF) |
| 40% body weight (28 litres) |
33% Total body water & 20% body weight – 14 litres |
Interstitial fluid |
Plasma |
15% of body weight (10.5 -15 litres) |
5% of body weight (3.5 litres) |
- An adult weighing 70 Kg contains 42 liters of water.
- In early fetal life, TBW is 90% reduced to 75-80% at birth → Reducing further to 60% by end of one year.
COMPOSITION OF ECF & ICF:
ECF:Most abundant cation-Na+ (142 meq/l)
- Most abundant anion- Cl- (103 meq/l)
- Bicarbonate concentration HCO3 (28 meq/l)
ICF:
- Most abundant cation – K+ (150 meq/l) & Mg2+ (58 meq/l)
- Most abundant anion – Phosphates (75 meq/l) > Proteins (40 meq/l).
- Thus ECF to ICF ratio will have a high Na+: K+ ratio.
- pH – Slightly lower than ECF and slightly alkaline in nature.
MEASUREMENT OF BODY FLUID COMPARTMENTS
- Measurement of body fluid volumes is done by ‘Dilution method’
| VOLUME | MEASUREMENT |
| TBW |
| ECF |
| PLASMA VOLUME(PV) |
| RED CELL VOLUME |
| ICF |
