Fatty Liver

Fatty Liver

FATTY LIVER

  • Fatty liver is the excessive accumulation of fat i.e. triacylglycerol in the liver (25- 30%)
  • Triglycerides is stored in the adipose tissue.
  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disorder.

Causes of Fatty liver

1. Overproduction of triacylglycerols- it is due to

  1. Starvation, diabetes mellitus
  2. High fat diet
  3. Alcoholism

2. Raised levels of plasma free fatty acids- (VLDL synthesis impaired)

  1. Block in apolipoprotein synthesis
  2. Block in the synthesis of lipoprotein from lipid and apolipoprotein
  3. Block in the synthesis of phospholipids that are found in the VLDL.
  4. Failure in the formation mechanism of lipoprotein itself from lipid and apoprotein.
  5. Orotic acid
  6. Lack of lipotropic factors (choline, betaine, methionine, lecithine and inositol, vitamin B12, Vitamin E)
  • Lipotropic Factors- which prevents the accumulation of fat (triglycerides) in liver.

Alcoholic Fatty Liver-

  • First stage of alcoholic liver disease –à cirrhosis (caused by alcoholism)
