Q. 1

Which of the following is a characteristic post mortem finding of drowning?

 A

Dribbling of saliva

 B

Cherry red discolouration

 C

Paltauf’s haemorrhages

 D

Pugilistic attitude

Ans. C

Explanation:

Paltauf’s haemorrhages are postmortem changes of drowning.

The alveolar walls may rupture due to increased pressure during forced expirations, and produce hemorrhages, which when present subpleurally are called ‘Paltauf’s hemorrhages’.

Paltauf’ s haemorrhages are shining, pale bluish-red, and may be minute or 3-5 cm. in diameter.

They are usually present in about 50% of cases in the lower lobes of the lungs, but may be seen on the anterior surfaces of the lungs, and the interlobar surfaces.

 A

Lungs are ballooned and light

 B

Colour is pink

 C

Emphysematous

 D

No crepitus heard

Ans. D

Explanation:

Crepitus is heard in fresh water drowning, but it is absent in sea water drowning.

Q. 5

Most common consistent feature after a child has been taken out from pond died from drowning is:

Q. 5

Most common consistent feature after a child has been taken out from pond died from drowning is:

 A

Water in lungs alveoli

 B

Petechial haemorrhages

 C

Washer woman skin

 D

Cyanosis

Ans. B

Explanation:

B i.e. Patechial haemorrhage

None of them is specific finding of antemortal drowning Paltauf’s haemorrhage (sub pleurally) are found when alveolar walls rupture as a result of increased pressure during forced expiration.

Presence of water in lung alveoli does not indicate antemortal drowning if it does not contain froth.

–   Reddy – Petechial haemorrhages of asphyxial type are not found usually. Rarely subepicardial region of heart posteriorly may show.
