Sphingophospholipids
Sphingophospholipids
- Contains sphingosine as alcohol (no glycerol)
- Most important sphingophospholipid is sphingomyelin.
- Ceramide= sphingosine + long chain fatty acid.
- Sphingomyelin = Ceramide + Phosphoryl group + Nitrogenous base
- Phosphorylcholine= phosphoric acid + Choline.
- Sphingomyelin is one of the principal structural lipids of membrane in nervous tissue.
- Role in signalling and apoptosis.
- Sphingolipids are present in nerve cells and brain cells.
- Sphingomyelinase Deficiency causes- Niemann- Pick disease (accumulation of sphingomyelinase in brain, liver and spleen)
